WEIRD NEWS: Fishy Fight

Posted: Tuesday 11:37AM Feb. 12, 2013 PST

A man in England fought off four muggers with one hand – while his other hand was holding on to fish and chips he just purchased

John Wood, 37, said he had just walked out of Frank’s Fish & Chip Shop in Wisbech, Bambridgeshire, when four men approached him and asked for his wallet. Wood’s phone went off at the exact moment and the muggers demanded he hand over the phone too. “The irony,” Wood said, “was it was my fianceé who messaged me saying, 'Be careful, it’s dangerous out there.'"

Wood reportedly used the Aikido skills he learned as a teen to kick two of the guys in the knees. He knocked down a third before the fourth man stabbed Wood with what doctors believe was a sharpened screwdriver.

“I didn’t even drop the chips,” he said. “It was all done one-handed.” His fiancée, Claire Upton, told the BBC that Wood arrived home and refused to go to the hospital but later drove himself there. Police are still investigating the incident. (Huffington Post)

A Florida man accused of stealing wallets from women's purses got a dose of karma when he was arrested after leaving his own wallet at the scene of a crime.

According to Lauderdale-by-the-Sea police, Stephen Maxwell, 47, stole wallets from women's purses at bars and restaurants in the seaside community, on a spree that started back in November.

But his pilfering ways came to an end when a woman interrupted him while he was going through her purse. Maxwell fled the bar − leaving his own wallet and I.D. behind. (SunSentinel.com)

WEIRD NEWS: Woman Gives Birth to 16-Pound Boy

Posted: Tuesday 01:03PM Feb. 12, 2013 PST

A Texas woman gave birth to a baby boy who weighed in at a whopping 16 pounds – more than double the weight of an average newborn.

Janet Johnson's fourth child, JaMichael, came in to this world at 16 pounds and an amazing 24 inches long.

Johnson and her fiance, Michael Brown, were expecting to have a large baby, as their doctor predicted the baby would weigh 12 to 13 pounds.

No dice.

“He was much larger than expected,” said the doctor, saying JaMichael was the biggest baby he had ever delivered. “Both his mother and father are large people, and she was diagnosed with gestational diabetes, which contributed to the baby’s size.”

Baby JaMichael, who is reportedly the largest newborn in Texas history, has earned himself a nickname already – “Moose.” (ABC News)

DICK CLARK: His Caveman's Home Remains Unsold

Posted: Tuesday 01:54PM Feb. 12, 2013 PST

Imagine living in a house combining the spirits of Dick Clark and Fred Flintstone. We're not kidding. Maybe you recall our story last March about the late American Bandstand host's Malibu retreat, with its rounded adobe walls and oddly shaped windows that strongly resembles the animated suburbia of Bedrock. Apparently, the distinctive property is a little too unique. It's been on the market for a year -- and now TMZ says the Clark estate has cut the price. Sitting on 23 acres of prime property, the home is yours for only $3.25 million.

LADY GAGA: Gone 'Til November

Posted: Tuesday 09:12AM Feb. 12, 2013 PST

Don't look for Lady Gaga at next year's Grammy Awards. The Mother Monster won't release her new ARTPOP album until at least November, well past the deadline for 2014 Grammy nominations.

Gaga has admitted that the disc is nowhere near complete, and she's on tour for a few more months, which will cut into her work time. Showbiz 411 says she also plans to record that album of duets with Tony Bennett before getting ARTPOP into stores.

If it drops in November, that will make a break of more than two-and-a-half years.

VALENTINE’S DAY: The V-Day Sewage Plant Tour Back by Popular Demand

Posted: Tuesday 01:15PM Feb. 12, 2013 PST

If you live near Brooklyn, New York, and are looking for something romantic to do on Valentine's Day, you should consider taking a tour of a state-of-the-art sewage treatment plant.

Seriously.

Last year’s Valentine's Day tours of the Newtown Creek sewage treatment plant, which sits on one of the most disgusting waterways in the country, was such a hit that they’re throwing their doors open again this year.

Highlights include the plant's giant egg-shaped “digesters,” which break down nasty waste into harmless sludge and gas.

During last year's tour, the plant's superintendent warned the visitors a digester egg was about to emit a foul odor. It didn't disappoint.

And, as an added bonus, each Valentine's Day visitor gets a Hershey kiss at the end of the tour. (The Wall Street Journal)

SHARKS: They're Coming After Us

Posted: Tuesday 01:15PM Feb. 12, 2013 PST

Has shark week turned into shark year?

In 2012 it sure seems like it did, as shark attacks on humans reached their highest level in more than a decade. The University of Florida's International Shark Attack File says the U.S. experienced 53 attacks in 2012, the most since 2000.

Florida led the U.S. with 26 attacks. Hawaii had 10 attacks, followed by California and South Carolina with five each. The report says there were seven fatalities worldwide, which is lower than 2011 but higher than the yearly average of 4.4 from 2001 to 2010.

Matt Damon has gone on strike -- from using the toilet.

In a humorous PSA to help support Water.org, the actor tells reporters that he won't go to the bathroom until everyone in the world has access to clean water and sanitation. Matt, who's the co-founder of the website, says, "Anybody have any idea what invention has saved more lives than any other in the history of humankind? The toilet. What's even more shocking is the catastrophic worldwide lack of clean water and sanitation. 780 million people -- that's twice the population of the United States -- lack access to clean water. 2.5 billion people lack access to a toilet or basic sanitation. I mean, more people have cellphones than have toilets."

Matt wants everyone to help. He says, "Join me. Say no to toilets. Say yes to clean water for all."

For just $25 a day, Matt says, one person can get clean water for life. To find how you can help, visit StrikeWithMe.org.
