ED SHEERAN: Helps Preserve Music
Ed Sheeran was among the featured artists at Thursday's 15th annual Music Preservation Project event at the Saban Theater in Beverly Hills. The Grammy Foundation fundraiser's theme this year was Play It Forward: A Celebration of Music's Evolution and Influencers, and Sheeran paid tribute to one of his musical forebears by opening with Bob Dylan's "Don't Think Twice, It's Alright," before closing with his Grammy-Song-of-the-Year nominated "The A-Team."
ED SHEERAN: Elton John Is Playing My Tune!
"Surreal" and "random" are the words Ed Sheeran uses to describe rehearsing his song "The A-Team" with Elton John for Sunday's Grammy Awards show. The red-headed singer tells us that Sir Elton has been "very helpful" to him for almost three years now, but that yesterday's run-through of his song was "surreal. Elton John is playing a song that I wrote...very random."
EAGLES: Azoff Intros Film at L.A. Screening
Longtime Eagles manager Irving Azoff introduced The History of the Eagles, Part One, at an industry screening of the film Thursday in L.A. He explained why the band felt this was the time to make the documentary by noting that they "had a lot of footage around that was aging like fine wine and we thought it was time to crack it open."
Azoff also noted that the film is about three things: the Eagles, the Southern California music scene and the American dream. He said that a release date for the DVD of the film will be announced soon.
Part One, which ends with the band's 1980 breakup, will premiere on Showtime on February 15th. Part Two, which includes their reunion years, starts airing on the 16th.

CISSY HOUSTON: Mad at Clive Davis
Cissy Houston says Clive Davis can keep his invitation to his annual Grammy party.
Whitney Houston's mother says she has no interest in returning to the scene of her daughter's death last year. She tells Access Hollywood, “I got an invitation to the party, which is the most obscene thing. I don’t know why they would want me to come to the party in which she died, you know? Unheard of."
Cissy doesn't want to go the party, but Whitney's brother Gary Houston and sister-in-law Pat plan to attend. Pat says, “[Clive] was such an important part of Whitney’s life. I mean, that was her industry father, and he really, really was. My husband and I will definitely be there this weekend to support Clive. Absolutely.”
LINDSAY LOHAN: It Isn't That Bad
Remember that story that Lindsay Lohan is so broke she had to move back in with her mom? It isn't true -- not exactly, anyway.
TMZ reports that Linds is crashing in a friend's ritzy penthouse apartment in New York City. And the real good news is that she doesn't have to pay any rent. The friend is letting her stay until she finds a place of her own.
ROD STEWART: Postpones Tour
Rod Stewart has postponed his Live the Life Tour, with special guest Steve Winwood, from the spring to the fall. This was done because his Time album isn't ready. Or, in the words of his press spokesman, to "accommodate the finishing pre-production and spring promotion of his first original rock studio album in almost 20 years." The album is due out in May.
Tickets purchased for the spring dates will be honored at the rescheduled shows. Alternately, refunds are available at the point of purchase until February 22nd.
PATTI SMITH: A Katie Honor
Patti Smith was honored Thursday night with the 2013 Katharine Hepburn Medal from Bryn Mawr College. (Katherine Hepburn, the late four-time Oscar-winner, was an alumna of Bryn Mawr.)
The women's liberal arts school near Philadelphia recognized the singer as a rock 'n' roll trailblazer whose work as a musician, writer, performer and visual artist has influenced multiple generations.
Smith was very happy to receive the award, saying, "Bryn Mawr is helping shape the futures of young women and providing them with the tools to be dominant forces in our society."
Patti Smith will be in Los Angeles Friday night for the MusiCares tribute to Bruce Springsteen. She and Springsteen co-wrote her lone Top 40 hit, "Because the Night."
SHIRLEY BASSEY: Singing on the Oscars
Shirley Bassey will perform at this year's Academy Awards. The voice of three James Bond themes -- most famously "Goldfinger," the first 007 song to become a worldwide pop hit -- will appear for the 50th anniversary of the series. The Los Angeles Times notes that while none of Bassey's contributions were nominated for Oscars, Adele's "Skyfall" song is. Both Englishwomen will appear on the February 24th extravaganza.
PAUL McCARTNEY: Down in New Orleans
Those London tabloids can get very creative -- especially when it comes to a celebrity as famous as Paul McCartney. Over the years, Sir Paul has become an increasingly visible fan of American sports. We've seen him in the box seats at Yankee games in New York. And last week, he was in New Orleans, attending events connected to Super Bowl 46. This morning, a story out of London claimed that McCartney was busking (singing for donations) aboard a street car -- and went unrecognized by some of the other riders. Too bad that appears to be a fabrication.
The New Orleans Times Picayune paints what seems a more plausible picture. Paul was indeed riding a streetcar the week of the big game. Evelyn Trahan got on and took the seat next to Paul -- and then sang a few bars of "I Want to Hold Your Hand." The former Beatle joined in, and posed for pictures. Feeling they might be imposing, Trahan and her friend got off the streetcar a few blocks later. But they were left with a sweet memory and the amazing souvenir of a chance encounter with a Beatle.
But, sorry to say, McCartney wasn't singing for money!
BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN: Loves His MusiCares Tribute
After watching a procession of artists perform his songs, a jubilant Bruce Springsteen called Friday's MusiCares Person of the Year benefit "one of the best nights of my life." He then made the evening even better with his own five-song set, which ended with a stage full of artists, many dancing gleefully and helping Bruce out on the chorus to "Glory Days."
TONI BRAXTON: The Music Stops
The music is over for Toni Braxton, who's announced that she's leaving the biz forever to concentrate on other professional options.
Toni tells The Grio, "I have to feel that excitement and it’s gone. I’m just not going to do any albums anymore. Maybe touring occasionally here and there because I love performing, but not as much as I did in the past. But no new projects."
Toni says she's not leaving the public eye altogether, and plans to ramp up her acting career. She says, “I would like to play a lesbian. I don’t know why. And do a whole make-out scene and the whole thing -- just something completely different than people would expect from me." She stars in the made-for-TV movie Twist of Faith, which airs Monday night.
NO DOUBT: Gwen Hits the Slopes
Gwen Stefani is bundling up for the next addition to her L.A.M.B. clothing collection -- a line of ski gear.
The new threads, which she created with the help of athletic-wear specialist Burton, debuted late last week at the SIA Snow Show in Denver. The line includes items as varied as a $20 beanie and a $180 down jacket, and will hit stores in the fall -- just in time to hit the slopes.
Gwen says, "We worked really hard on the pants. You don't think of snowboarding pants as super-flattering by nature, so we tried to mix masculine and feminine, which we always do, and give them a really cute fit -- then added that tuxedo stripe for the edge."

Six in 10 Americans now think that the economy has been wrecked to the point where it can’t be fixed.

HEALTH: Southern Diet Raises Risk of Stroke
With such dishes as chicken-fried steak and sweet tea, Southern cooking might be very tasty – but it also raises the risk of stroke in a big way.
Researchers from the University of Alabama found that people who regularly ate foods traditionally found in the Southern diet had a whopping 41 percent increased risk of stroke.
Unsurprisingly, all that fatty food and sugar end up clogging the arteries and causing major health problems down the line. (ABC News)
WEIRD NEWS: When Male Strippers Attack
In England, a male stripper was heckled by women so badly that he snapped, dove into the crowd and started a fight.
Leon Zbudowskyj was a last-minute replacement for a hunky model that ended up being a no-show.
The women, angry that the guy they came to see wasn’t going to hit the stage, booed poor Leon and ripped on him without mercy.
According to one woman in attendance, Leon came out with no music, no routine and – worst of all – no six-pack.
"He looked like he had been hit in the face with a pan,” she said. Now that’s just cruel. (CapitalBay.com)

She was the 2012 cover girl too. It's the first time since Tyra Banks did it in the mid-'90s that a model has gotten the honor back to back years.
After the photo was revealed Friday, Kate tweeted, "I look...cold lol." No doubt. The photo shoot took place in Antarctica. "Took us two months to thaw out," she said in another tweet.
The issue hits newsstands Tuesday, and Kate and nine other models will be appear Monday on Letterman to promote it.

THE SOCIAL NETWORK: Is Technology Taking Over Your Personal Life?
Is technology taking over your personal life? Join the club. A new study from the University of Michigan shows that most people communicate over social networks or email about as often as they speak face-to-face.
The average person has about 75 face-to-face conversations a month, compared to 74 electronic interactions on Facebook, Twitter, email and Skype. The downside is you’re more likely to be misunderstood when relying solely on electronic communication. When you communicate offline, you benefit from reading a person’s face and better understand their moods and behaviors.
Women’s Health recommends allocating two or more hours per week for human interaction to keep technology from running your life.
